April has arrived and with it we have a couple premier events coming up in Pensacola. First off we have the innagural Gulf Coast Interstate Relay, which begins on Thursday, April 4 in New Orleans, Louisiana and ends on Saturday here on beautiful Pensacola Beach. The GCI Relay is a 263 mile run or bike race that takes participants through the swamps of Louisiana, the Mississippi beachfront, the country roads of Alabama and finally through downtown Pensacola to the beach. This is the first relay event where participants can choose which team (cycling or running) they would like to participate on. Another reason to get behind this newborn race is to help support the ocean conservatory. Each year the GCI Relay will donate a portion of it’s proceeds to the ocean conservatory to help protect endangered species among other things. So if you didn’t get a chance to participate this year make sure you start training and sign up early next year to get a spot in this unique race!
Next up the Gulf Coast Half Marathon returns for the fourth time to Pensacola Beach. Come out and enjoy 13.1 miles of spectacular views of the Gulf of Mexico on one side and the Santa Rosa Sound on the other. There will also be a Post-Race Party at Flounders following the race. The race is scheduled for Sunday, April 7 so don’t miss out on a beautiful run! The next event I’d like to tell you about is the SPA Women’s Spring Nationals senior softball tournament. The tournament will be at Exchange Park from April 11-14th. Come out for a great weekend of action as the women’s slow pitch softball tournament is hosted in beautiful Pensacola, Florida. The tournament features teams from age groups starting in the 30’s and goes up to the 70’s. More than 30 teams from across the southeast are expected to compete in the tournament.
And last, but not least, is the National Leading Competition Committee (NLCC) and JAM Brands cheerleading and dance US Finals on April 13 at the Pensacola Civic Center. Premier cheerleading and dance teams from across the country (and world!) will compete in five divisions to see how they compete with similiar squads. The competition starts at 8 A.M. and goes until 10 P.M.. The 2011 competition included almost 1,700 different squads!
